Hi, I’m Sam Henney.
My coaching draws on more than 20 years’ experience working across the cultural and higher education sectors, including senior leadership roles with organisations such as Oxford University, National Theatre and Disney Theatrical Productions. I understand the distinctive opportunities and challenges faced by professionals in the arts and education sectors, and I work with clients to navigate complexity, build confidence and achieve meaningful outcomes in their roles.
My career in the arts began with a summer internship at English National Opera in my late teens. That experience sparked a lasting interest in the creative industries and led to roles in marketing, consulting and leadership across some of the most dynamic cultural organisations in the UK and beyond. Along the way, I discovered a natural affinity for helping others succeed, which ultimately led me to train as a coach.
I hold an Advanced Qualification in Executive Coaching from the Institute of Leadership & Management and am an EMCC Accredited Coach at Practitioner Level, ensuring my practice aligns with recognised professional and ethical standards. I also work as a coach on the Oxford Cultural Leaders programme (an initiative by the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School in partnership with the university’s Gardens, Libraries and Museums), and the Clore Leadership Connect/Reflect programme in partnership with the Arts Council England and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, supporting cultural leaders to tackle the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
Alongside my coaching work, I serve as a Non-Executive Director at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Compton Verney Art Gallery & Park, and I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
From time to time, I also undertake interim leadership roles within cultural and academic organisations. Remaining engaged in organisational leadership helps keep my coaching grounded in the realities faced by professionals in these sectors.
Whether I’m working with established leaders or supporting emerging professionals as they shape their careers, my coaching is grounded in a deep understanding of the sector and a commitment to creating thoughtful, supporting space in which clients can reflect, gain perspective and move forward with clarity,
Based in Oxfordshire, I work with individuals and organisations across the UK.
